School Days and MyCAA

by Tammy on July 21, 2010

Well for those of you that don’t know I have started back to school last week.. I’m attending University of Phoenix working towards my degree in Communications. It is an online program so it works with my family’s schedule and my crazy work schedule.

I’ve been thinking about this for a few month but there was always so much going on with Dan’s deployment, the kids’ needs, work.. the list goes on and on.

Since we are embarking on all these new changes coming up so very soon, I figured it was time to head back to school. It’s not about needing to get a degree for work , its more about just wanting to do it.

When I found out about a special program for military spouses called Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA ) that was run by  the Dept of Defense  where they were offering $6000 to get your degree/license/certificate.

I thought it was the perfect time.

The program itself was having some issues but I was still eligible . Best part they were willing to pay for it .

So here I am a full week into school and things are going great…oh so i think.

The DOD decided re-vamp the entire MyCAA program and place all kinds of  restrictions including total amount, rank and degree.  The kicker is that people like myself (and many military spouses) who were already in the program and receiving funds will NOT be grandfathered in.

I can’t say that I’m surprised by this , after all it is a Dept of Defense/Military program but why make these promises and then take them away. It’s NOT like it affects people’s lives/plans or anything (that was complete sarcasm if you couldn’t tell)

Now I will be fine and continue going to school due Federal grants/scholarship  and my salary but what about others that aren’t as blessed as I am. What will they do?
