Mac wounded in combat

by Tammy on September 15, 2009

AppleLogoWell not really but my Mac desktop is not doing all that well. The hard drive in my Mac is slowly dying. To say that I use my computer a LOT is an understatement.

My computer has been wonky (yes that is a technical term LOL) and running very slow the last couple of months. At first I thought maybe it missed SGT Daddy too. (well not really but the rest of us do) Then it started to crash, and I thought uh-oh. I knew it wasn’t a virus because let’s be honest – Macs don’t get viruses all that often (if at all)

So I finally take it in to the Mac store and the Genius Bar Guy (actually his name was Jon) tells me the hard drive was going out in it. I was crushed!

Then Genius Bar Guy tells me about replacing it and I brace for impact. He then says ” Well  you can get it replaced a lot cheaper by going to one of the local 3rd party stores in the area and I recommend Simply Mac ”

The cost would be around $200. I was giddy! I mean compared to the cost of purchasing a new Mac (roughly $2000 ) that was a great deal!!!

We’ve bought Apple/Mac products for many years and I’ve always been happy with them and Apple’s customer service. I was really impressed  this time around. They diagnosed and offered me a solution to the problem within 20 minutes. They even gave me a map to the 3rd party store. (honestly would Best Buy, etc do that??)

Most of those that know me really well, know about my love for the Mac. I can tell you after this I’m a Mac lover for life.

Hey Tammy,

I’m right there with you of the love for Mac. That is awesome that it’s only about $200. That’s one thing about Mac’s even when one piece goes wrong it’s so much better to fix then by new. With PC’s they look old and tired after a month. I use my laptop daily…if not all day and all night – every day of the week and it still looks and preforms like the day I took it out of the box.

I will always love that “power up” sound that it plays when you hit the power button. It’s like ‘ahhhh…I’m home!’

Sounds like you pay a whole lot for the Apple name, my husband got a brand new laptop a few months ago for $400! He’s also got a warranty on it so when he gets deployed, if something happens to it, it will be replaced no charge!

I don’t mean to start a pc/mac debate, but it sounds like your getting ripped off.

Well $200 is better than buying a new one that’s for sure. While I’m not a Mac user I’m beginning to understand why people rave about them. I’ve had way too many problems with my PCs (I’m on computer #2 (and actually am needing a new one right now!) already in 3 years – well almost 4 now).

Not necessarily.. part of it is the Apple name and high level of customer service. But having been a Mac user since 1998, I also know its a high quality product. Of all the Mac products (software included ) I’ve never had a “lemon”

I do graphic and web design for some clients so I need a system that can keep up with that. The Mac OS is a super stable operating system, you can’t always say that about Microsoft XP/Vista. In the two years, I’ve had this particular computer it had yet to crash on me until the hard drive started to die. The other thing about Mac is that it doesn’t need to run an anti-virus program on it. The virus creators don’t make viruses for the Mac (at least not yet) but they are rampant for PC’s

Now I could go on and on about why Mac is a better system… but let me just say this, You get what you pay for. :)

Full Disclosure – I do own an HP Mini Netbook (runs XP) … only use it for chatting on Yahoo/Skype and letting my kids play online games.
