Motrin vs Moms

by Tammy on November 17, 2008

Have you heard about the latest ad by Motrin that has a lot of moms up in arms??

I have to admit  when all this reared its ugly head on Twitter … I couldn’t understand what everyone was so up in arms about. Initially I thought, I must be misssing something here. I mean I haven’t thought of “babywearing” (back then it was called carrying your baby) in at least 7 years.

I didn’t think it was offensive to moms everywhere. I don’t know .. Am I a bit out of touch since it has been so long? (Full Disclosure :Both my kids are in elementary school now )

The thing that struck a chord with me was the “official mom” label! I have seen some babywearing moms look down on non-babywearing moms for not wearing their child. Maybe they physically can’t, maybe they “bond” in other ways, maybe the child can’t be put in a sling, etc for medical reasons, maybe they don’t want to.. the list can go on and on.

Why must we look down on people for not doing what we do?  I’m sure we have all seen situations where ‘bad parenting’ is screaming out but this my friends is NOT it!

This “discussion” is just like the us vs them discussion that many mothers have been having for years. (childcare options, breastfeeding, vaccinations, homeschooling, etc)

It’s a PERSONAL choice that each family makes  for itself and ALL of us need to respect that choice. (wow this sounds a lot like my last political rant doesn’t it?)

Parenting is hard enough by itself … why do we have to make it more difficult???

So, what do you think ? Here is the link  again in case you missed it!  : )

I have not even heard of the term “baby wearing” until now. I have friends who wear their baby, or carry their baby – and about the only thought I’ve ever had regarding the slings is “that looks handy”. That’s where the thought started and ended. Every baby is different, every situation is different, and many people make it into an us vs them situation, when it shouldn’t be. We are all experts on our own children, who better to know about them, than the ones who’s taking care of them. Motrin’s commercial is laughable at best. The mom seal of approval is about as trust worthy as the old “Kid tested Mother Approved” logo they used in the 80′s for Kix cereal. I usually buy generic medication, spending the extra dollars for name brand doesn’t happen much in this house. I would guess Motrin is going to relook at their ad campaign, as its not as embraced as they had hoped it would be. The mom’s that look down on other mom’s for wearing or not wearing, working or not working, breast feeding or bottle feeding – will find something else to look down upon, motrin is the topic dujour.

kinda silly, if you ask me. Clever ad – I had the BIGGEST neckache last week from carrying the granddaughter.. can we say “there are bigger worries out there?”

I wasn’t offended by the Motril ad at all. As I watched all the Twitter chat about it and all the blog posts that popped up in regards to it I kind of thought to myself – hmmm look at all the attention that one ad got them. LOL

I know what you mean about other moms (or just people in general) looking down on other moms for not doing certain things. It’s frustrating. I hate that people can be so closed minded thinking that their way is the only way.

Yeah I’ll just shut up now before going into a big ole rant :-)

No pain is a good kind of pain. I think the commercial was trying to make light of being a mom and that mom’s often have pain because we carry our children around everywhere. It wasn’t a very good commercial. It will probably alienate a lot of people unintentionally. My first thought was “That was dumb”.
